Hiring a senior developer the normal way takes months: job posts, hundreds of résumés, technical interviews, a notice period. Toptal sells a shortcut. Describe what you need to a matcher, and within about a day you’re introduced to a freelancer who has already passed language screening, skills tests, live interviews and a test project. Toptal says it accepts fewer than 3% of the more than 200,000 people who apply each year.
That vetting is real, and it’s why companies pay Toptal’s premium instead of posting on an open marketplace. The trade-off is cost and opacity: rates aren’t published, Toptal’s cut isn’t disclosed, and you won’t find a $30-an-hour bargain here. For important work where a bad hire is expensive, it’s one of the safest ways to bring in senior talent fast.

What Toptal costs
Toptal doesn’t publish a rate card because pricing depends on the role, seniority and engagement type. What it does publish, in its client FAQ, checked October 24, 2026:
| Cost item | What Toptal says |
|---|---|
| Platform subscription | $79 a month, charged once you proceed with matching. Cancel any time; refund on request if Toptal can’t provide talent |
| Trial | Up to two weeks with each new hire. Not satisfied, not billed |
| Trial candidates | Up to three people per position |
| Billing | Usually invoiced twice a month on Net 10 terms |
| Payment methods | Major credit cards, ACH, bank wire, PayPal |
| Talent rates | Not published. Independent 2026 estimates commonly cite about $60 to $150+ an hour, higher for niche specialists |
For context on what senior talent costs elsewhere, the Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median wage for US software developers at $133,080 a year in May 2024, about $64 an hour before benefits, payroll taxes and recruiting costs. Toptal’s rates sit above that, but you’re paying for speed, vetting and the ability to stop without severance.
How the matching and trial work
- A call with a matcher. Toptal says matchers have domain experience in tech, design or business rather than being generalist recruiters.
- Introductions, usually within 24 hours. Toptal says 90% of clients hire the first candidate introduced.
- The no-risk trial. You work with the freelancer for up to two weeks. Keep them and you’re billed for the trial time; don’t, and you aren’t, and Toptal introduces someone else with a fresh trial.
- Ongoing engagement. Hourly, part-time or full-time, scaled up or down as needed.
If Toptal doesn’t already have someone suitable, it says screening a new expert takes one to three weeks. Niche requests take longer than “senior React developer.”
Who owns the work, and other contract details
Two points most buyers care about. First, Toptal’s FAQ says all work its experts create belongs to the client. Toptal takes ownership through its talent agreements and passes it to you, and it can arrange a direct IP agreement if you need one. Second, you can usually convert a Toptal freelancer to a full-time employee by arrangement with Toptal.
Toptal experts work remotely from more than 100 countries, mostly in the Americas and Europe, and all are screened for fluent English.

What roles Toptal covers
The network has grown well beyond software engineers:
- Developers: front-end, back-end, mobile, full-stack, data and AI/ML engineers.
- Designers: UI, UX, product and visual designers.
- Finance experts: including fractional CFOs and M&A consultants.
- Product and project managers.
- Management consultants for strategy and operations work.
Developers remain its strongest category. The finance and consulting benches are smaller, so matching for specialist roles can take longer.
Getting more out of the first call
The matcher can only find the right person if the brief is specific. Before you talk to Toptal, write down the stack or skills required, the time zone overlap you need, weekly hours, what “done” looks like for the first two weeks, and who on your side will review the work. A tight brief makes the trial a fair test rather than a guess.
What owners complain about
Toptal’s client reviews are mostly positive about candidate quality and matching speed. The negative feedback centers on a few points:
- Price opacity. Clients don’t see how much of the hourly rate goes to the freelancer. Freelancers discussing Toptal on Reddit describe a significant gap between what clients pay and what talent receives.
- Billing disputes, especially over hours billed on engagements that didn’t work out after the trial window.
- Mixed results after the trial. Vetting reduces risk, it doesn’t remove it, and a few clients report freelancers who were strong in interviews but slow on delivery.
- The $79 monthly subscription feels like an extra fee for clients with occasional needs.
Our advice: use the full two weeks of the trial seriously, give real tasks with clear deliverables, and check every invoice during the first month.

Toptal vs Upwork, Fiverr and agencies
Upwork is an open marketplace with every price level, from beginners to experts. You do the vetting. It’s far cheaper, and far more work to hire well.
Fiverr suits fixed-price, well-defined tasks like a logo, a landing page or a video edit. Its Pro tier adds vetted sellers, but it isn’t built for long engagements.
Development agencies take on whole projects with project management included. They’re often pricier per hour than Toptal, with less flexibility to scale one person up or down.
Our freelance marketplace reviews compare more options. If you’re building a product, our software reviews cover tools your new hire will likely touch, including Kinsta for managed WordPress hosting, Semrush for SEO research and ActiveCampaign for email automation.

Who should skip Toptal
